How the Climate Affects Your Battery

Climate and Your Car’s Battery 

Your car won’t function without a battery. All of us who have had to jumpstart our cars on a rainy day or help a stranger out in the parking lot know how intrical a battery is to your car's operations. In general, you should replace your car battery every four to five years. However, your car battery is more finicky than you might realize. Too-cold weather can make the battery less effective, while too warm weather makes for quicker corrosion on the inside. Either way, the climate can affect how your battery works and cut down its lifetime. 

Heat Under the Hood

Luckily, we don’t have to worry too much about freezing temperatures or snow here in California. However, the warmer temperatures are what we need to pay attention to. The temperature under our car’s hood shoots through the roof when it gets warmer. This will speed up corrosion to your battery and shorten its life. 

If you’re getting close to your four-to-five-year mark, you may want to double-check that your battery is doing okay. This is important before the warm weather comes around, not when. You want to make sure your battery is healthy and functional before the problems start. Checking before the warm weather comes around will save you the headaches of constant jumpstarts and possibly a tow.
